Ice Skating Lessons

Today was Owen's third week of ice skating lessons.  He and Paul skated a few times last winter on bumpy outdoor ice.  We'd bring a chair and have him skate behind it.  Some friends of ours highly recommended this class through the city, so we signed Owen up for it in hopes of getting out more this winter.  He's enjoyed it so far.  The first two classes, they worked on falling and getting up.  Today they started out that way, then got up onto their feet. He's doing pretty well for being out there by himself.

2013 Family Photos

Our beloved photographer moved to California and this week, I couldn't be more sad about that!  She was amazing from how she worked with Owen, how she captured his personality, how she sent us sneak peeks so we could see what they would look like, her presentation of the CD, and her amazing images.

We went with a new woman this year and unfortunately, I was really disappointed.  She said we'd have our CD with photos in two weeks and after constant nagging, being lied to a few times and finally just having to ask if she lost our photos, we got the CD in the mail.  To be honest, the presentation stunk, I had to email her and ask for the copyright release and also for her to explain how I should go about ordering the few printed photos that our package comes with.

The photos aren't horrible, but I'm used to going through Joyce's photos and not being able to pick because each one was better than the last.

Here are the best ones.

We brought this pink heart balloon with a purple A on it with us to the photo shoot.  My hope was to get some photos of us holding the balloon and then releasing it.  Unfortunately, when she took the above photo, Owen grabbed his tackle box and up with the balloon before we had the opportunity to do any photos with it.

Each year I have Owen's picture taken with Mr. Bear.  When he's older, I want to give him a box with Mr. Bear and photos of him throughout his childhood with his bear.

All Saints Day

When Paul and I celebrated the Rite of Naming in June after Abby passed away, we got to write her name in the Book of Life.  This book is used to write all the names of the parishioners that have passed away that year.  Then on All Saints Day, they sing each of the names and hold up a candle to honor that person.

After a lot of thought, I decided to invite some of our close friends that have helped us through this journey and our family to be with us that day to celebrate Abby with us.

The day came and the outpouring of love and support was nothing short of amazing.  We definitely felt loved and supported that day.  As much as I really wanted to be strong and not cry because we were celebrating that Abby is in heaven, I did have a few selfish moments where I felt sorry for myself that she won't be here with us.  I know she is in a much more amazing place and if she had to choose, she'd probably stay in heaven with Jesus!

Throughout this journey, I read a quote that said, "A mother's role is to protect her baby.  When that baby passes away, a mother's role is to protect the baby's memory."  That isn't easy when people don't have memories of her.  But being part of the mass not only publicly recognized her, but celebrated her and for that, I am so grateful.

After we lost Abby, I was told about a woman in Australia that lost her baby boy.  She has a dream that he was by a beach, writing his name in the sand.  The next night at sunset, she went to the beach, wrote his name in the sand and photographed it.  It was beautiful and many others asked her to do the same for their angels.  Now, she's taken over 17,000 photos for grieving parents.  She only opens her list for a few hours each month because the requests just pour in.  I was lucky enough to get on her list a few months back.  This is the amazing photo she created for us.  Such a treasure!

Happy Halloween 2013

Wow, I am falling behind.  If I don't download photos and write a post the day something happens, I tend to let them pile up and I get behind!  Paul is out of town this week and I had a wonderful Mother's Helper (aka sweet 6th grade girl that came to play with Owen while I got a few things done around the house) tonight.  SO, now I have some time tonight to catch up on blogging!

Halloween was a lot of fun this year.  Owen started saying months ago that he wanted to be a construction guy for Halloween and he really never waivered.  Easy enough!  We have tools - check!  We have a tool belt - check!  We have a hard hat - check!  We just ordered a kid's size safety vest and bought some face paint (he said he needed a beard) and we were good to go!

We started the festivities on Tuesday at the Kowalski's Boo Bash with our friends from Ronda's.  Owen got to Trick or Treat with his best buddies and his best girls.  He was pretty timid while trick-or-treating, but once we got back to Ronda's, he was a wild man!
